Day 11 – The sword of destiny
We drive from Nagarkot to the Mini Great Wall, located a few kilometers beyond Kalapani in Sailung which takes around 3 hours. This concrete wall, complete with stairs, was constructed by enterprising locals as an homage to the Great Wall of China. It, along with various local religious and mythical attractions such as Sailung Gumba, the Navel of Earth, Sailungeshwor Mahadev, and Buddha’s steps, attracts many domestic tourists. Sailung, meaning “100 peaks” in the local language, features many lush green hills, including a section that looks like a sword and is believed to be the sword of Bhimsen, a warrior prince from the Hindu Mythology Mahabharata. The hills look quite steep from the base but offer a fun ride. Initially, we ride our bikes for 45 minutes to the top, where a stupa and a view tower provide unobstructed
360-degree views. After taking in the scenery, we begin a 20 km, 5-hour downhill ride through diverse terrain, including potato fields, dense forests, local villages, and open meadows. Some sections of the trail are highly demanding, while others are easy and enjoyable. Although the beginning section is purely a single track, the trail intersects with jeep tracks at several points, allowing us to bypass the most technical parts if needed. Our ride concludes at the Tamakoshi River, from where we drive back to
Charikot. Accommodation at Charikot Panorama Resort (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Day 12 – Trail of the gods
Dolakha is steeped in folklore and myths dating back to Mahabharata as it is believed to be settled by the Pandava, the five protagonists of the world’s longest religious mythology, during their exile. The language that is spoken in this region is quite unique. This language is again considered to have been coined by the Pandavas so that it would be incomprehensible to the outsider, aiding their anonymity, which was a precondition of their exile. Many relics from the past, including the temple Dolakha
Bhimsen, command a high reverence from the locals and outside visitors. We drive one hour to Kuri, the small settlement situated at the bottom of Kalinchowk hill. From there, we take a short cable car ride to the shrine of the power goddess Kalinchwok Bhagbati, at 3842m. This shrine, a major pilgrimage destination in Nepal, is highly revered and believed to bless its devotees with prosperity, protection, and success.
We embark on one of Nepal’s most technical 26 km of rocky trails from here. Unlike the trails of Ratnange Trail Center in Phaplu, Dolkha trails are chunky rocky trails that thoroughly test your technical skills. Dolkha trails aim to be the first straight 3000m drop on the trails, rock slabs, uneven rock stairs feature, fire dirt jeep road, backcountry trails rock stairs features, and big root sections combined with flowy fluid
trails. The full length consists of Kalinchwok—Kuri, Ying-and-Yang (the backcountry trail), Epic Trail (Main Trail1), Bike Park Trail, Fire Road Trail, Rock and Roll, Crazy Cobra (Main Trail2), and Back to School Trail. To add to the glory, the first-ever enduro mass start race in Asia was held on 29 November 2023, and Mountain Biking legends like Kylian Bron participated alongside many emerging local stars.
